The SOHO Motorsports Single Turbo Kit for the Nissan 350Z and Infiniti G35 has been designed for the specific purpose of being the best and most efficient single turbo kit on the market for the VQ35DE platform. With many years of experience of building and racing VQ's up our sleeves, we have taken all of our accumulated experience and spent many hours of research and development on paper, on dyno and on track to make the best kit possible! We have ensured that extra attention has been given to every single detail on the SOHO Motorsports Single Turbo kit. All of those details can be found in the somewhat lengthy description below. Every design choice and product choice has been carefully and strategically calculated to create the best single turbo kit possible. On top of making this kit the most effective and powerful kit possible, we spent time to make sure our design required little to no modification to the engine bay during install.
Our newly redesigned SOHO Motorsports Single Turbo Kit for VQ35DE engines is a truly unique forced induction system. Using the completely stock VQ35DE engine with no other aftermarket modifications, we have pushed the VQ to its safe daily driven stock block limit. On a very conservative long-lasting tune, our Dyno Jet dynamometer made 384 rwhp and 384 ft-lbs of torque at a very low boost setting of 8psi thru an automatic transmission. With our unique design, our turbo kit features a near instant power curve that not only achieves full boost quickly but also has amazing mid and high range power and torque leaving the driver with a very even and powerful curve all the way to redline. The new Garrett GTX3582R turbo mixed with our unique routing and piping diameter choices make this kit a perfectly balance forced induction kit for anything from street use to track abuse, stock engine or fully built engine.
Along with our unique design and meticulous attention to detail, we have also utilized the best companies in the industry to supply the necessary pieces for our SOHO turbo kit. Such as Garrett, Tial, Turbo Smart, Z1 Motorsports, Deatschwerks, Injector Dynamics and UpRev. These products have been tested and proven many times over on our street cars and pushed to their limits by our racing program for years. Everything we have learned from our long history on and off the track combined with our deep passion for the VQ platform has been molded into what we consider the perfect single turbo kit for Nissan 350Zs and Infiniti G35s! Please review the following description of the turbo kit which has been broken down into sections based on design components.
The SOHO Motorsports Single Turbo kit uses the GTX series Turbo by Garrett, the GTX3582R Version 2. Garrett turbos are a mainstay in the industry and have proven to be one of the best turbo manufacturers on the planet. We chose the GTX turbo over the normal GT turbo series because the GTX turbo remains in a higher efficiency range on the compressor map for a longer duration than the regular GT turbo thanks to its new design. The GTX is a water and oil cooled, ball bearing turbo with a billet compressor wheel that features a ported shroud compressor housing to increase surge resistance, a design that is unique to only the GTX turbo series.
The Turbo by Garrett compressor wheel and housing is accompanied by the Tial 1.06 v-band exhaust housing, which allows for the best possible turbo combination with nearly no lag time along with great mid-range torque and high-end power. This turbo setup combined with our unique piping layout make our kit a perfectly balanced forced induction setup for anything from daily driving to relentless racetrack abuse. If you are cruising on the highway, launching at the stop light, racing on track or drifting the SOHO turbo kit layout matched with the GTX3582R turbo is the perfect setup for your VQ.
The entirety of the SOHO Motorsports single turbo kit is made from high quality components of which include stainless steel and aluminum. On our original kit we used stainless steel for the cold side piping, in the version two of the DE kit we have reverted to aluminum piping for the cold side along with a new orientation of the piping. We have nearly removed 50% of the piping that we had on our original kit with this new version two which has provided quicker spool times and power.
Using the best quality materials and our unique piping layout, our kit is designed specifically to not only reduce heat soak in the engine bay but also reduce turbo lag, boost creep and boost fall off as seen on many other kits. Our design begins with the aluminum 2.5-inch charge pipe coming off the GTX35R compressor housing, adjacent to the passenger side head light directly into the 3-inch opening on the SOHO Motorsports intercooler on the passenger side. Sustaining the piping size equivalent to the turbo outlet allows for the air to keep the same velocity until it travels to the intercooler where changes in pressure allow for the air to increase in velocity as it makes its way towards the throttle body.
Our specifically designed intercooler, which uses a Garrett core, is designed to aid in decreasing pressure loss and improve cooling efficiency across the entirety of its core surface. We have also taken extra effort on the design of the intercooler by determining the best angle for the end tanks to help aid in channeling the air as close to the center of the core as possible, allowing for better and more efficient cooling. Routing our piping this way makes our kit especially effective on the street or on track, with nearly no turbo lag and maximum boost seen significantly early on a stock VQ35DE all while keeping engine temperatures low.
Heat can be detrimental to any vehicle from street cars to race cars, and at SOHO we pay close attention to the needs of all uses our kit will take on. G35s and 350Zs are versatile sports cars used in all forms of motorsports and anyone who has pushed the limits knows of the excessive under hood temperatures these vehicles may see during extended spirited driving. When adding a turbo kit under the hood of these platforms, temperatures will obviously increase, and is a large concern on most forced induction kits.
Routing the charge pipe beneath the radiator and in the cool air, instead of above the radiator like most kits, allows cool air convection to take place as air passes underneath the vehicle and across the surface of the charge pipe. Convection will occur as air travels over the pipe at speed, dissipating a vast amount of the heat that the pipe may receive as it passes by the bottom of the radiator. This allows the air traveling towards the intercooler to be more effectively cooler, and in turn, makes the air entering the engine in a quicker and cooler fashion, allowing for more responsive power.
All of the piping on the SOHO kit requires little to no modification to a stock vehicle, allowing for a simple install and nothing extra to do under the hood. Abiding by our OEM style setup the MAF sensor is still within reach of its stock harness, but it has been moved closer to the throttle body than most kits on the market. Moving this sensor closer to the throttle body will help in resolving any hesitation that may occur during daily driving or tracking as seen in other kits. We have learned from our racing program that with the new MAF location, the car is much more responsive to throttle input in any condition and allows for more accurate tuning on the dynamometer.
The hot side piping of the SOHO Motorsports single turbo kit was designed to be minimally invasive to the underside of the vehicle while allowing the best route for the exhaust gases to flow. All of the piping utilizes v-band clamps to eliminate the use of exhaust gaskets and to ensure the best contact amongst pipes. There are no clearance issues that the end user will come across with this kit, no matter how low your vehicle may be, as we have placed the hot side piping high and tucked it around the transmission.
Keeping with the OEM style theme, we utilized the OEM exhaust manifolds when it came to designing the kit. Based on our success with the VHR single turbo kit, we opted to route the hot side on the opposite side of our previous DE kit for a number of reasons. We wanted to offer a kit that was different, and with a few modifications to the cooling system, we were able to route the hot side alongside the passenger side.
Exhaust gases leave the manifolds, then travel into a custom two into one collector that allows the two exhaust banks to merge smoothly, reducing any unwanted back pressure. After the collector the exhaust gases are quickly moved to the turbo via the up pipe which has an overall diameter slightly larger than the manifold pipes to also aid in reducing any back pressure where both manifolds meet at the collector.
The location of the waste gate has been placed away from the turbo and down-pipe and off of the collector in an effort to help sustain the boost pressure off of the waste gate spring and also eliminate any boost fluctuation throughout the entire power band. The waste gate has been placed closer to the exhaust side to allow for minimal pressure changes when the waste gate opens and exit via an open dump. On many kits the waste gate dump re-connects where the down pipe meets the exhaust close to the turbo.
This is not proper placement because introducing even more turbulent exhaust gasses from the waste gate to the already large amounts of turbulent exhaust gases exiting the turbo via the down pipe can often lead to an unwanted increase in back pressure, thus making the engine work harder. Placing the waste gate further back as we have done on our kit allows the exhaust gases to settle from the turbulence exiting the turbo and dumps them back into the atmosphere.
For exhaust options, even if you do not choose our exhaust, any stock fitting aftermarket cat back exhaust will work perfectly with our kit, as long as it bolts up to the stock y pipe location.
With the design of this new DE single turbo kit, the cooling system was converted into a VHR style cooling system to allow us to mount the turbo on the passenger side. With the use of the pathfinder rear coolant crossover pipe, we were able to eliminate the coolant pipe that runs along the passenger side and route a coolant hose through the center of the engine block underneath the intake manifold.
With the installation of a forced induction kit of any kind on the VQ35DE platforms, the fuel system needs to be addressed. A forced induction kit will obviously increase the amount of air that the engine will see, thus in order to maintain a safe air-fuel ratio, there will be an increase in the amount of fuel that the motor will need. The stock size fuel pump and injectors are incapable of maintaining the fuel flow necessary to make power safely under boost. This is why our Premium Turbo kit features the perfect combination for the increased demands by way of an upgraded Deatschwerks 340lph drop-in fuel pump and Injector Dynamics 1050cc fuel injectors with plug and play adaptors. Both of our Base and Premium kits include a Z1 Motorsports oil pan spacer which allows for an extra quart of oil and also features a pre-drilled/tapped oil drain pickup. This eliminates any drilling or modifying that may need to be done to the engine block as seen on many on other turbo kits. A custom SOHO oil catch can is also included in the kit to aid in the removal of any excess oil that may, during spirited driving, breathe from the crank case via its pressure relief hose. Many kits on the market feed this hose back into the intake under boost, which can contaminate the spark plugs with the crank case oil, thus reducing power. We have seen firsthand thru research and development just how much oil is dumped from the crank case in high G corners and hard driving and routing it to anything other than a catch can be detrimental to power and performance.
With the increased power levels due to the addition of boost and the increased amount of fuel available due to the injectors and pump, the Premium kit comes supplied with an UpRev GT MAF sensor, and SOHO Motorsports can offer Uprev Tuning Services upon request.
